Butoh is a Japanese avant-garde dance form that arose in 1959, post-World War II in the wake of Hiroshima. The term means ‘dance of darkness’ and was built on a vocabulary of crude and grotesque physical gestures … a direct assault on the refinement and understatement so valued in Japanese aesthetics. It is perhaps the most daring attempt yet made to translate the mysterious, often tormented life of the unconscious into the communal medium of theatre and cinema.
